Supplementary Data Extension — Controlled Extra Information, Not an XML Junk Drawer

ISO 20022 Beyond the Message

A local community needs to carry one extra piece of structured information. The base ISO 20022 message they are using does not have a normal business component for it.

“That answers whether XML can contain something there. It does not yet answer whether our extension is governed, agreed, version-compatible or meaningful.”

ISO 20022 provides a controlled extension mechanism in some Message Definitions. Where the mechanism is present, it can allow a community to carry information that the base message does not otherwise cater for. But that freedom comes with governance. The extension is not arbitrary XML, and it is not automatically acceptable merely because the base XSD contains a SupplementaryData component.

If every local requirement immediately forced a new global message version, the standard would become difficult to maintain.
