External Code Sets — Vocabulary That Can Evolve Without Rebuilding the Message
ISO 20022 Beyond the Message
Example scope: The named-bank stories, sample code strings and system designs are fictional teaching. XML snippets are conceptual fragments, not verified ISO message instances; the xs: snippet is an XSD excerpt requiring its surrounding schema and namespace binding. No sample value is asserted to belong to a current official code set. Select the exact message datatype, published vocabulary and receiving-service rules independently.
An ISO 20022 message is not only a tree of XML elements. Some elements carry controlled code values. For some code sets, the permitted values are defined directly in the message schema. For external code sets, the values are deliberately maintained outside the message schema.
That separation allows the vocabulary to evolve more frequently without forcing a new version of every message that uses it.
Instead, the code set is maintained separately and published by the ISO 20022 Registration Authority after the relevant governance and Standards Evaluation Group approval process.
